TVs are measured diagonally - not horizontally like furniture - which means that your brand new 60 inch TV is not actually 60 inches wide at all. To further complicate matters, the measurements of a 60 inch TV do not include the bezel (or frame) around the screen. More complications arise with the new HDTVs. These flat screen TVs have screen aspect ratios of 16:9 - meaning that the height is 56% of the width. Old CRT TVs are more boxy with a screen aspect ratio of 4:3, meaning that the height is 75% of the width.
